Sarah is a contemporary theatre maker who has vast experience as a director and dramaturg for companies and venues both here and overseas. Sarah creates work with, by and for children and young people. Her work blends an interest in live art, visual and immersive theatre and participatory theatre and is informed by her research on children in contemporary performance, ethical dramaturgies and the cultural rights of the child.
Sarah’s practice predominantly uses a devised model of theatre making to create new performance, and she has an embedded collaborative framework for creating work that is underpinned by an inclusive theatre practice methodology.
Sarah has also worked as a dramaturg and director of new Australian plays, and in particular has a long relationship with the work of emerging Australian playwrights. Sarah has directed and developed a range of new plays with young Australian writers and worked across a cross section of developmental contexts. For St Martins and in association with the Australian Ballet, and with collaborators Alex Walker and Hannah Liddeaux, Sarah developed SOUNDTRACKS, a pioneering contemporary art intervention which involved children live commentating canonical and contemporary performance. With her company Sarah Austin and Co, Sarah has recently created Only A Year, an award-winning work for babies aged 0-12 months.
